You can experience the thrilling world of the ocean right in the middle of Times Square. The National Geographic Encounter Ocean Odyssey is a permanent exhibit in the heart of NYC. Not only is this experience fun for the whole family, it is also educational. You will learn important facts about our oceans and sea life, as well as some grim realities about the effects of pollution on our world’s oceans.

One of the best things about the Ocean Odyssey experience is that your family will learn about ocean conservation. Participants get the opportunity to take part in keeping our oceans free of plastics and other harmful pollutants. You can even choose a pledge to help sustain our beautiful oceans. In addition, a portion of your admission cost goes toward ocean research, exploration and conservation. Therefore by visiting, you are also contributing to an important cause.

A Surprise Around Every Corner

The bulk of this experience is a guided tour through several rooms which takes about an hour. As you navigate through this exciting adventure, there is a surprise around every corner.

With the use of special effects and animation, participants journey through the underwater world with out ever getting wet. Kids will love navigating through a kelp forest, standing in crystal blue waters while sting rays and sharks swim underfoot, and being immersed in bio luminescent wonders of the deepest parts of the ocean.

Make a Pledge (or two or three…)

At the conclusion of the guided tour, the group exits into a large room with interactive screens and educational games. You are free to stay as long as you would like to explore the digital exhibits. Be sure to stop at the large screens prior to the exit. Here you have a chance to take as many pledges as you choose to help conserve our oceans and protect sea life. For example, you can pledge not to use plastic straws or avoid plastic water bottles. There are several other simple pledges to choose from that will positively impact on our environment.

It is best for you to experience Ocean Odyssey with the element of surprise, so I do not want to give too much away. If you are looking for something truly worthwhile to do with your family that is both entertaining and educational in NYC, add this to the top of your list. There has never been a more important time than now to get children involved in caring for our oceans.

Look for Deals

There are many good deals to be found for discounted admission. We found a great deal on Groupon so be sure to check before you go. Consider making a purchase at the gift shop during your visit. There is a great selection of ocean themed gifts and souvenirs, and you will have the option to round up to support ocean research, exploration and conservation.
